I'm starting my Quest for the elusive Ten Pound Largemouth Bass. This blog will be an archive of sorts, a way to look back at my progress, learn from my trips, and discuss the tactics and tackle that I used. I'm no expert, just a guy that got bit by the BUG.
I grew up fishing in small ponds in Delaware. I think the biggest bass I caught as kid was 5 pounds. At least thats what I would claim, but then again I was just a kid. The little Zebco spring scales we had were worthless. In fact, I don't think we ever weighed that one. Me and my friends would cruise the lake in town catching everything from carp to turtles to crayfish. Before school, after school, and sometimes during school. Yes, we were nerds. But alas, we all grew up and moved on.
Fast forward 25 years. I'm living in beautiful San Diego. Surfing, spearfishing, and saltwater bass fishing are my hobbies. I have a beautiful wife and baby on the way. During my weekly poker game, which I've played in for a few years, a buddy reveals to me his passion for the lunkers. I have no idea how I've known this guy so long without getting involved in a bass fishing conversation. I guess the beers and smack talking drowned it all out.
One night however, we went fishing.
I was HOOKED. My buddy estimated it to be five pounds. It was definitely bigger than any LMB I have caught in my life. I caught it on a Yamamoto Fat Ika, with the hook reversed so the skirt is on top
Tapping it along the bottom, I felt a subtle bite and swung! Nah, actually, I was picking out a backlash when I noticed all the line I picked out was running into the water! Reeled in the little slack, swung, and fish on! The fish came in fairly easy and this guy was STOKED!
So here we are, early May, I have obsessed over fishing for the last few months. Surfing and diving have taken a back seat. All my poker winnings turn into plastic and hooks. I want to catch a Double Digit Bass (DDB). So the dilemma: Can I dedicate myself to throwing large baits and wishing for that one BIG bite? Should I fish for quantity and hope the big girl hits? What techniques should I use? Will I get to fish when my baby comes? Will I want to?
So many questions. This is gonna be fun! Well, here we go!!
